The Line that Divides
by Jacob Correll

The series is tied. There is no tomorrow. Tied at 45-37-1 something has to give. See, I'm not talking about the NBA Finals, but rather the playoffs as a whole. I'm talking about the gambling game between my buddy Stephen and I that has lasted throughout the NBA playoffs. To make things more interesting (it's the NBA for crying out loud) we decided to pick every game of the playoffs against the spread. Things were close for a while, until I took the poker equivalent of a bad beat and my luck went straight down from there.

I'm talking about Dwyane Wade and his showboatsmanship that had him intercept a Nets pass with under 5 seconds left, race the length of the floor with no one chasing him, and thundering home a jam at the buzzer for a 6 point Heat win. The line was Heat -4.5, and I had taken the Nets. The last seven games have been up and down. I cut Stephen's lead to 1 game with the Pistons’ game 7 win over the Heat, and then tied up the series when I took them again in game 4 against the Spurs.

Then in the pivotal game 5, with the Pistons at -4 and looking good to cover in OT up 93-89, Big Shot Rob happened…again…in the same game (he scored 7 in a row just before in regulation). With my back up against the wall, I had to pick the Pistons in game 6…and they prevailed.

I know Stephen is taking the Spurs in game 7, but I still can't decide. I mean, who wants a tie when they can go for the jugular. I feel like Tom Osbourne back in the Orange Bowl against Miami, when he went for 2. According to an espn.com poll the majority thinks the Pistons will win tonight. Vegas says different, putting the line at Spurs -4.5.

Here's how the game goes tonight. It's game 7, so Detroit is going to make sure the game is real physical. Guess who I like in that type of game? Hmmm, the Spurs or the team whose least physical player hails from Compton, CA? The referees can either let the Pistons get away with this, or they can call everything. Does someone else foresee a multiple technical foul game? Doesn't the line for Billups or Wallace technical fouls have to be around over/under 1.5 for the game? Will either stay on the court if they know they are going to lose the game?

Don't forget about Larry Brown. I think his jet will start its preflight sequence for flying into Cleveland at about halftime. So what I'm really betting on is how the referees will call the game. It's a good thing I don't have any real money on this game, because most NBA officials suck.

I'm taking the Spurs to win, mainly because I picked them to win it all during the season, and I hate being wrong. In other words, I really don't have a clue. As for against the spread, I think a tie is pretty good for being down so much of the playoffs…but probably not good enough.
